Heart-to-Heart

For more than two decades, the Women’s Employment Network (WEN) has been an integral part of the Kansas City nonprofit community.

No other organization in the metro area is dedicated to providing the training and support services to improve the employment and economic situation of women.

WEN was founded in 1986 through the vision of legendary Kansas City leaders Beth K. Smith and the late Marjorie Powell Allen. They learned of a successful woman-focused employment program in San Antonio with an emphasis on self-esteem. Realizing the need for this vital service in the Kansas City area, these dedicated women marshaled resources to form the Women's Employment Network (WEN).

Since its inception, WEN has graduated more than 5,400 women from its programs, while assisting thousands more through support services, community referrals and other training.

Beth and Marjorie’s commitment to helping women resulted in the creation of three of our community’s most important institutions that serve women – Women’s Employment Network (WEN), The Central Exchange and The Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City. Today, their tremendous legacy continues to benefit women and families throughout our community.

Learn how to support WEN through the new Beth K. Smith and Marjorie Powell Allen Legacy Circle.
